A Vehicle Background Check - Why You Need To Run One On Yourself

Have you ever thought of pulling a vehicle background check on yourself? Might not be as dumb as it sounds!

Even though most people don't even think about it, having a vaheicle background check done on yourself can be one of the smartest financial, legal and emotionally therapeutic things that you can do. If you plan to apply for a job where you're required to drive or you need to insure your car, you can count on other people taking out such reports on you to make sure of who you are.

- Driving records help to determine if you are a safe, responsible driver. A vehicle background check may also be a report pulled on you to determine what type of vehicle you are driving.

- Your driver's license report is another very important report to pull on yourself so you can verify how clean your driving record is. You want to know if there are any mistakes there that could potentially affect your insurance rates or even worse, your ability to obtain a job that requires you to drive.

First and foremost, forget about the "I have nothing to hide" mentality where a vehicle background check is concerned. The fact is that mistakes happen all the time on these reports. Even if you have a completely clean history, you may have a black mark on your report that could potentially cost you a job or impact your insurance premiums. Mistakes happen for no reason other than inaccurate information has been provided or information has been incorrectly entered into the system.

It is up to you to find out if there is any type of mistake on your vehicle background check and to have it removed. No one else is going to do this for you. While the process of removing errors is not as simple as you may think, it is still well worth the work that it entails. Most of the time, you can protect yourself ultimately from these potential problems by just knowing what is on your vehicle background check so that you can provide this information to an employer and therefore prove your case with them.

You can visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find this information out. Often there is a small fee for pulling the report, but it is well worth it to check for errors. You don't want to be suffering from someone else's mistakes!

If you have been convicted of a driving-related crime, you should know exactly what you have been convicted of and what that means for your vehicle background check. For example, a DUI and a DWI are two things that are not considered minor traffic violations, something that is commonly asked about on an application. If you make the mistake of believing that they are minor violations, then you could be falsifying an application.

In addition, if your driver's record has improved over the course of the last few years, you may have been dropping "points" as they are often called, or marks on your license. When this is the case, you may qualify for lower insurance premiums, one resaon alone that it's worth running your own vehicle background check. If something doesn't come off your record in time, you should be able to file a claim asking for it to be removed so that you can improve these insurance and driving records.

If you don't know what is on your vehicle background check you are potentially putting yourself at risk. Mistakes happen regularly but you can repair them and give yourself the best possible opportunity to secure the job or position you're after, or cut those insurance premiums.

Reasons For Online Background CHecks

There are many valid reasons for wanting to check out the background of someone you know. If you are an employer looking to hire a new employee, it is important to know their background for several reasons. If they will be driving a company vehicle, its important to know that their driving record is acceptable. Your companies insurance premiums will skyrocket if it is not. You will also want to know their criminal history, especially if they will be handling money or accounting jobs. It is also a good idea to know if a prospective employee has a history of assault charges, or stalking problems or anything of that nature to protect yourself and your other employees.

Or maybe you met a new guy (or girl) online and are interested in getting to know them better. Wouldn?t you rather know ahead of time if they are who they say they are? You can save yourself potential heart break, not to mention possible physical safety issues and financial stress by knowing the background of the person you are dating or thinking about dating. A background check does not guarantee your safety or well-being but it can help by providing you with some information on the person you are interested in.

I landlord can also utilize a background check when making renting decisions, especially if the apartment is connected to others. He wants to make sure that all his tenants are happy and someone with a poor criminal history may not make the best neighbor. A violent person is one who a landlord would probably want to avoid,

There are many reasons to do online background checks. There is a lot of information that is available online, from the comfort of your home, that can help you make decisions on all kinds of issues relating to people. Although you have to take each case individually and remember that people are more then just their mistakes, it is a great idea to check out the background of prospective employee?s , significant others(especially if something seems suspicious-trust your instincts), and prospective tenants, as well as countless others. You can potentially avoid a lot of headaches and hassles by having some of this background information BEFORE making a decision on hiring or dating or letting someone move into your home or apartment.

Background Check Yourself?

Most background check services search public records that may include such information as your phone number, address and criminal background. However, they can also process the information they receive from public record and build associations or perhaps even false information. For example, some ?people searches? look for aliases that may lead some to think that you are someone else. If you have ever received a bill addressed to someone else, with a similar name, a collection agency may have ran a search and sent the bill to possible aliases in an attempt to locate a debtor.

So why background check yourself? Two reasons: one, to verify if information is correct and two, to see if someone else is using your identity.

Verifying Information

Who might check your background?

  • Employers
  • If you submit an application or a resume to a company, they can run a background check to verify your resume information such as past employment, professional licenses or degrees. It is a good idea to check your personal information before someone else does to find out if everything that comes back is accurate. For example, if your degree does not show up you can obtain the information directly from the school to give to the employer.

  • Loan Processors
  • When you apply for a line of credit, you can assume a credit check will be conducted. Unfortunately, often credit reports come back with inaccurate information. Make sure to keep your own records, if you pay off a bill keep receipts and payment in full letters from creditors. They can also run asset checks to look for things such as home value.

  • Collection Agencies
  • This is a common tool used by collection agencies when they are looking for a debtor. Sometimes they may get false information, or they may think you are someone else. Keep all of your own records to prove to agencies that you do not owe the debt. If you run a search on yourself, you may find other names that come up with your name, as aliases or as associations. These other people may be the ones that actually owe the debt. For example, if John M. Smith owes a debt and your name is J. Mark Smith, collection agencies may send you a bill, thinking that or hoping that you might be the debtor.

Identity

Someone may be using your personal information for credit applications or for other uses. Also, unintentional misuse may occur, for example if someone enters a SSN incorrectly.

  • Credit Monitors or Credit Watchers
  • This type of service offered by many background search services, helps you monitor your credit. You can use a credit monitor service to watch your credit over a period of time to look for inaccuracies, credit score changes or to see if some is trying to use your information. For example, you can run a search using your SSN to find out if any other names are associated with your number.

So what do you do if reported information is incorrect? Unfortunately, changing inaccurate information can be a confusing, complicated process. Nevertheless, there are a few ways to change report information:

  • State, County, National Information: You have to contact appropriate public agencies to correct public record. These types of records include criminal, court, tax, liens, judgments, small claims, driving and bankruptcy records, as well as birth/death and marriage/divorce records. Public record also manages information regarding property including real estate and motorized vehicles.
  • Credit Reporting Agencies: The three main credit reporting agencies include Experian, TransUnion and TRW. Current law provides that you can receive a free copy of your credit report once every twelve months, see www.annualcreditreport.com. To change information on your report begin by writing a letter to all reporting agencies disputing the claim, include copies of supporting documents if you can, wait for them to analyze and investigate your claim and make appropriate changes. If changes are made you can request another free report to verify.
  • To Block Searches: Some background search services enable you to opt-out of their search program. They report that they cannot block you from every search option but from most. Most search services require that you send them your social security number, full name with middle initial, aliases, current and former addresses as well as birth date. Keep in mind, that for complete protection you will have to make this request with every reporting service separately.

To find out how the Freedom of Information Act governs federal agencies see the US Department of Justice, Freedom of Information Act page at http://www.usdoj.gov/04foia. This act does not control records held by Congress, the courts, or by state or local government agencies. You will need to contact your state or local agencies to discover their guidelines in regards to the release of public information. For local information, see the Washburn School of Law webpage at http://www.washlaw.edu/uslaw/states/allstates. This site offers links to all 50 states and links to other legal pages of interest.

If you are curious to see what is being reported about you, visit US Search.com and run a ?personal records profile? that will report information regarding your address up to 10 years back, aliases, associations (roommates, relatives and neighbors), bankruptcies and liens, small claim records as well as property and home ownership data including value.

Generally, all of your public information is available to anyone that asks for it, but it is up to you to make sure that the data is accurate.

Personal background check

A personal background check enables employers to get an idea of an applicant's professional and emotional fit with reference to company credo. The background check can begin with a reference check that covers both personal and professional references. A review of credit reports offers useful insight and concrete information regarding an employee. The type and number of credit accounts and the bill-paying record is a fair indicator of an individual's suitability, particularly for accounts-related positions. The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows employers to utilize information available in an individual's credit record in order to assess their suitability for a job. Details provided in a credit report serve as a useful counter-check for information made available by the applicant.

Employers should take care that their personal background check resources are verifiable and that they do not violate privacy and equal opportunity legislations. Information obtained during a personal background check helps the company to build a clear picture of the applicant; the information can include criminal records, debt, age, past residences, marital status, and past jobs. The information provided by third-parties is usually marked "verified" or "unverified". This helps companies to decide quickly whether they wish to entertain a job application or not. In order to obtain a well-rounded picture of an individual, the personal background check company may gather information from friends and neighbors of the applicant. The company requesting a personality background check should try and obtain information relevant to the nature of the job so that no time is wasted hunting for redundant information.

Companies can outsource a personality background check depending upon the extent of information desired. Often, it is cheaper if companies conduct a personal background check in-house as they can obtain the information required from the county and state information databases.

As the name suggests, personal background checks can reveal deeply personal information and traits about an individual that can be useful to not only employers but also to landlords who may not wish to have tenants that have a history of loose conduct. Such checks are also done by parents to learn more about prospective spouses.

How to order an online background check

The spread of the Internet has resulted in easy access to information. Background check agencies now provide their services online. The advantages of online background checks include swifter results at low cost and easy communication during and after the background check is complete. An employer desirous of an online background check can approach any of the various companies offering the service. To order an online background check, a company would have to register online with the background check provider. Registration involves offering information about the business and paying a one-time processing fee. The online background check companies also offer registration via toll-free calling. Most online background check companies do not charge a monthly service fee and there are no minimum background check requirements. Payment options include credit cards and services such as PayPal. Companies need to clarify the type of check and the amount of detail required. To avail the services of an online background check company, one does not need any on-premise equipment except a computer connected to the Internet. Online background check reports generated as per a client's request are stored on the background check company's website for quick perusal and retrieval. Before requesting an online background check, it is important for a company to have written permission from the applicant. These online background checks help companies in exercising due diligence while recruiting employees. The checks are customized as per the requirements of the company. The results are made available in 1-3 working days from an online check being ordered.

Free Criminal Background Check

Many investigation companies advertise free background checks on their websites, but for any background checks required in business that involves collecting some quality and accurate information, spending money for a professional background investigation would still be the best option. Free background checks do exist but are not the proper choice when it comes to jeopardizing a business or a company. Although not a good option when an exhaustive search is essential, a free background check can provide some enlightening basic information about an individual.

One of the first searches in a free criminal background search is the fundamental records search. This could unearth some of the basic information such as the date of birth and other personal details of the individual. Since this search usually produces information about the specifics of the individual, they can be used for further background search about the person.

SSN authentication can reveal a gamut of information about an individual. The SSN can be verified from the records existing with the DMV. Since a falsified SSN would look similar to the original one, the truth can be revealed only during the investigation. A driver's license could be another option with which to conduct an investigation. Though the driving history is not open to the public, investigators can persuade the officials to give access to these records if the investigation is legal.

The DMV also has access to an individual?s personal details as well as the addresses of all the places where the individual has previously resided and is currently residing. So a legal investigator would be able to obtain these details with ease from the DMV.

These are some of the basic details that can be unearthed by anyone or by companies providing free background criminal search. However, an exhaustive and in depth search would entitle spending a lot more along with taking up a bit of time while waiting for an accurate and extensive report to be delivered.

Undergoing a Criminal Background Check

I have worked as a teacher and as a therapist and for both careers, I have had to have a criminal background check. This precautionary step is a great screening tool for employers who hire people who work with children. Recently, I have come across a few news articles that involve people who work with children who have a criminal record. Not everyone who works with children is required to have a criminal background check. This is a very disturbing trend and many school districts and childcare providers are taking steps to assure that their employees have a criminal background check before going into the field.

In addition to the criminal background check, many employers are requiring that employees have a clearance check that involves a history of child abuse. This is another screening tool that is essential for people who are going to work with children because it checks for crimes specific to children. A person may not pass a criminal background check because he was caught shoplifting when he was eighteen. The person may be a model citizen and he may be very good with children, but he will probably not secure a position because of the criminal background check.

Recently, I had to be fingerprinted to complete clearances for the University of Phoenix online education program. The state of Arizona requires teachers to have a fingerprint clearance in addition to the traditional criminal background check. I wasn't concerned about the results of the fingerprint background check, but I did have to take my five-month-old daughter to the police station so mommy could get fingerprinted by the local police.

For some reason I did not give a second thought to the criminal background check, but the fingerprint clearance gave me bad dreams. I guess that it had to do with having to take a baby to a police station or just good old-fashioned guilt, but I kept dreaming that the fingerprints came up in an investigation for a major crime. The dreams were really disturbing and I told my husband that I must have a guilty conscious. He thinks that it has to do with the realization that the Federal Government makes the fingerprint clearance and I'm beginning to see things on a larger scale.

Maybe the guilty dreams have to do with the fact that no one is perfect. We have all made mistakes and we have all had to face the consequences for our mistakes. Passing a criminal background check is no problem for a law-abiding citizen like me, but passing a fingerprint background check seems to strike me on a more personal level. After all, a part of me is literally cleared through the state. I guess that I realize that I am not perfect and I should feel lucky to have an opportunity to touch the lives of our children through my career.
